Description

Delightful homemade sourdough runzas filled with ground beef, cabbage, and onions, all encased in a tangy sourdough crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cabbage (chopped)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Combine the sourdough starter, flour, salt, sugar, milk, water, and softened butter in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
  3. Cover the bowl and let dough rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add ground beef, cabbage, and onion.
  5. Cook until the beef is browned and vegetables are tender, about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Season the mixture with salt and pepper, then transfer to a bowl and let cool.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Roll out the risen dough to about 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface.
  9. Cut into squares, approximately 4×4 inches.
  10. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each square and fold edges to seal.
  11. Transfer runzas to a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush with the beaten egg.
  12. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Feel free to customize fillings and use different meats or veggies to your taste.
